What is Resiliency?

Interior Architecture + Design undergraduate program
This course examines the development and impact of resiliency as it relates to a community’s ability to predict, react and adapt to unanticipated factors.  Students gain factual knowledge about the strategies and tools required for implementing resiliency with a focus on historical built environments and business continuity planning.  Students analyze and observe various resilient approaches used across the globe and explore these important cultural and geographical differences through international travel.

For the spring 2016 semester we are focusing on Boston and Barcelona.  Mount Ida College is located in Newton MA and travel to Barcelona will occur in May 2016.

Research
Affordable housing is not only a problem in America, but in many of the other 100 resilient cities, including Barcelona. Homes are destroyed from not only natural disasters, but also avoidable accidents that wouldn't necessarily happen if they had better housing options. Too many people are living in slums all around the world and as designers, it is our responsibility to provide affordable housing that is not only easy to maintain, but is also sustainable. These homes should be easy to build, made from recycled materials, and be able to be upgraded as desired of each family. Giving these families a simple home to live in will not only improve their attitudes, but also improve their health and well being.
